Open House Informational Meeting

February 18, 2012

  1. You’ve asked for it and we are here to deliver! For anyone in the Chicagoland area interested in finding out more about Camp Highlands for Boys, March 11, 2012 from 2-3 pm at 4040 Linden Ave. in Western Springs, IL, we’ll be hosting a short, but action-packed open house.
You’ll see last year’s camp videos, meet Mike and Sharon Bachmann, and get a real flavor for who we are – very important when choosing a camp. AND, we have swag! We’ll be raffling off t-shirts and a free store account worth $75.
And for those folks who’ve already experienced the Highlands magic – this is your chance to tell your friends and families! They’ve heard the mythical stories of Cubbie overnights, paddling the pristine waters of the the North Woods. They’ve seen the pictures of all the awesome friends you’ve made. They’ve heard about Lois’ meatloaf…. So now, invite them to find out more. They will thank you for it!
For more details and to RSVP, check out the event on Facebook, or just email us. See you there!

  2. Camp is right around the corner

Gosh, I just checked the Camp website and saw that we only have 138 days until Summer of 2012 officially begins. We here at CH HQ are working hard hiring staff and getting all these campers enrolled! We are excited to have so many familiar faces AND we are thrilled there are lots of new boys joining us. And the enrollments keep rollin’ in!
So take a look guys, and see if you recognize any names on this list. We have a handful of boys that were unable to come last summer, but are re-joining us this year. Awesome! It really only takes one summer away from CH to realize how awesome camp is! Is your name on this list???

  3. CH Gallery: Thousands (literally!) of Photos

Preserving our history in images is one of the things we love to do at Highlands. From the early days, Doc Monilaw was often behind a camera, capturing incredible images that give us a little glimpse of the past. Tim Bachmann, as many of you know, has been scanning, editing and publishing photos from the 109 summers at Camp. If you haven’t had a chance to check out his books on Blurb, I highly recommend them. The CH Archives are also a great resource for photos.
In the name of continuing this great tradition, Mike Bachmann is the resident photographer, and has been so for the last few decades. He’s got a great eye and knack for the portrait. Take a look a the “Faces of 2011” gallery to see what I’m talking about. I am so inspired by all those faces that I made them the cover of the CaHiBo this year. It’s a great metaphor for what it takes to make a special summer at Highlands. I’d say it was the BEST summer in current memory. And instead of picking one photo or a few photos to try and capture that magic, we show each face, since each child brings their own special something to Camp. (disclaimer: We really tried our best to get every boy on there. We hope we got it right…?)
And now, we are posting several hundreds of photos to the gallery on the website. Please email us for a password (for the safety of our campers, we don’t make the galleries public). A couple of my favorites are Mike B. with the intertube on the scooter, Matt Schaible in a cowboy hat with Stella and Evelyn from the “Texas Round Up” day, and a handful of great shots of *my* guys, Judah and Andy. Do you have a favorite? Let us know!
Thinking ahead to 2012….will your face make the CaHiBo this year? We sure hope so! Until next time, fare thee well!    –Tracy B.

  4. Four websites in 12 years!

Version 4.0 of the Camp Highlands website is here, and man are we excited about it. We hope it will continue to be a tool for parents and campers with an improved photo and video gallery. You’ll have an opportunity to start a conversation with parents, campers and alumni on the blog. We hope it’s a great way for parents to connect and share ideas. It’s will be your one-stop shop for Facebook, Twitter and weather updates! Surely there will be kinks to work out along the way, so let us know if something isn’t working like it should.
Can you believe that www.camphighlands.com is 12 years old? In that time we’ve have four websites. Climb into our time machine as we take a look at the past websites…
[slideshow elements=”3″] [image link=”http://camphighlands.com/wp/wp-content/themes/camp-highland-for-boys/images/blog111911website1.jpg” caption=”Circa 1998: The site was the online brochure”] [image link=”http://camphighlands.com/wp/wp-content/themes/camp-highland-for-boys/images/blog111911website2.jpg” caption=”Circa 2005: A freshening up of the old site with a focus on FUN! For now, download the enrollment form and email it to us. You can automatically fill it out in Acrobat, too. Give us a ring if you’d like to pay by credit card.

  5. Happy Holidays from your Highlands Family

What better gift could you get than a summer at Camp? That’s why we are offering a special CH gift package. T-shirt (special edition with long sleeves!), drawstring back pack and a ticket to camp. It’s an awesome way for grandparents, aunts and uncles and friends to get in on the camp action!
What will you be up to over the holidays? The Bachmann crew always gets together down in Florida. Tim, Carol and Lukas Bachmann fly in from Boulder, Laura Bachmann Cubillos and Jose, Mateo and Esperanza come in from Park City, UT, Mike and Sharon drive down from Chicago and Andy, Tracy, Judah, Stella and Remy come down from Gainesville, FL. We hang out on the beach and just enjoy being together.
The CAHIBO will be in your hot little hands around the end of December. This year, we will be posting ALL the photos we took over the summer to the gallery. Keep your eyes peeled for that!

  6. Blog Headline Goes Here

Camp Highlands is more than a camp. It’s an institution. It was founded in 1904 by a University of Chicago lab-school principal charged with giving boys a “real wilderness experience.” For more than a century we have had the honor of watching boys grow and learn, struggle and persevere, play and explore.

Boys throw balls on the same fields as Heisman trophy winners Jay Berwanger and Nile Kinnick. They paddle the same waters as Senator William Proxmire and Ambassador George Kennan. They perform on the same stage as playwright Archibold MacLeish and actor Bruce Dern. While we celebrate those great men of the past, we believe that every Highlands camper is capable of greatness.
